The SEMLEC K-9 Unit provides trained handlers and canines to assist member agencies across southeastern Massachusetts. When activated, teams support operations ranging from tracking and searches to detection and tactical assistance.

Why the K-9 Unit Matters
K-9 teams bring unmatched tracking, scent detection, and agility, making them invaluable in fast-moving or terrain-challenging incidents. SEMLEC’s regional model ensures all member departments have timely access to these capabilities, even if they do not maintain their own K-9 program.
Activation & Membership
Member chiefs may request the Unit through SEMLEC’s mutual-aid system. Once activated, K-9 teams coordinate directly with the requesting agency under established SEMLEC protocols and standards.
Training & Standards
Handlers and canines maintain strict certification and ongoing training in tracking, detection, building searches, evidence recovery, and integration with other SEMLEC units to ensure operational readiness.
